Utah's Hard Water: What It Does to Your Water Heater, Pipes & Fixtures

That white crust on your faucets is the visible part. Here's what the same minerals are doing inside your water heater and plumbing.

Short answer: most Wasatch Front homes have hard to very hard water, and the dissolved minerals in it slowly coat everything the water touches — most expensively, the inside of your water heater. This guide explains what hard water is, what it does to each part of your plumbing, how often to flush your water heater here, and how to think about whether a softener is worth it for your house.

What makes water "hard," and how hard is it in Utah?

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up as water moves through mineral- rich rock — which describes most of the geology our municipal water passes through. It's measured in grains per gallon (gpg). On the standard scale, water above about 7 gpg is classified "hard" and above roughly 10.5 gpg "very hard." Much of the Salt Lake Valley and surrounding Wasatch Front communities falls in that hard-to-very-hard range, though it varies by city and even by season, since utilities blend mountain and well sources. Your city's annual water quality report lists your exact number, and we test hardness on request during plumbing visits.

Hard water is safe to drink — this is a plumbing and equipment problem, not a health one. The minerals only become an issue when the water is heated or evaporates, which is when they come out of solution and stick. That white crust on your shower glass? The same thing is forming inside your water heater, faster.

What does hard water do to a water heater?

Answer first: heat pulls the minerals out of the water, and they settle as scale on the bottom of a tank water heater — where the burner is. The consequences stack up:

  • Lost efficiency. Scale is an insulator. A layer of sediment between the flame and the water means longer burns to heat the same tank, every single day.
  • That popping or rumbling sound. Water trapped under the sediment layer flash-boils and pops. If your water heater sounds like a coffee maker, that's sediment talking.
  • Shorter tank life. The tank bottom overheats where scale accumulates, stressing the steel and the glass lining. In hard-water country, unmaintained tanks simply die younger.
  • Tankless units scale too. Tankless water heaters concentrate heating in a compact heat exchanger, so scale narrows those passages and trips error codes. Manufacturers require periodic descaling flushes in hard-water areas to keep warranties happy.

How often should you flush a water heater on the Wasatch Front?

At least once a year. In a soft-water region you might stretch that; at local hardness levels, annual is the floor, and homes on the harder end (or with high hot-water use) benefit from more frequent checks. A flush drains the tank and pushes the loose sediment out before it hardens into a permanent layer — ten minutes of maintenance that directly extends the tank's life and keeps recovery times fast.

If your tank has gone many years without a flush, don't panic-flush it yourself: long-accumulated sediment can clog the drain valve or reveal a weeping tank. Have it done as part of a water heater service visit where a pro can assess the tank's condition at the same time. What does hard water do to pipes and fixtures?

  • Fixtures and aerators: the crust you can see. Faucet aerators and showerheads clog, spray patterns go sideways, and finishes etch. Vinegar soaks help, but it's recurring housework hard water assigns you.
  • Valves and moving parts: fill valves in toilets, cartridge valves in showers, and the inlet screens on washing machines and dishwashers all collect scale and fail early.
  • Pipes: modern copper and PEX tolerate hardness well, so scale-choked supply pipes are mostly a concern in older galvanized-steel homes. If you have low flow throughout an older house, that's worth a professional look — start with our plumbing services.
  • Drains are a separate issue: hardness doesn't clog drains — grease and debris do — but mineral deposits can roughen pipe interiors and give buildup a better grip. Slow drains deserve a proper drain cleaning, not chemistry experiments.

When does a water softener actually pay for itself?

Honest answer: the harder your water and the more of it you heat, the faster a softener pays back. A softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium, so scale simply stops forming downstream. The payback comes from several small streams at once: a water heater that keeps its efficiency and lives longer, fixtures and appliances that stop failing early, less soap and detergent (soft water lathers dramatically better), and less descaling housework. Signals that a softener is worth pricing for your home:

  • Your city's report puts you clearly in the hard or very hard range
  • You've replaced a water heater early, or yours rumbles today
  • You own a tankless unit (softening protects the heat exchanger between services)
  • Fixtures, the dishwasher, or the washing machine keep needing repairs
